Writing Acapella Part One

You ever have one of those days where you wake up with a new song or perfect thought in your head and you need to let it out? And yet when you go to your guitar you find it is out of tune? And even more true than it being out of tune you realize I really can't play this thing anyway? But you have this thought, this tune, everything you need to write the blasted gift of a song is at your fingertips and yet you don't have the ability to create what you know you need to create? This is me almost every single day.

I know it is sad, I mean I have had the ability to not be able to create since I was little or so I deemed it. I always thought of these elaborate paintings or pictures I could draw and then color perfectly, in grade school, and yet every time I finished a piece I liked it better when it was just in pencil, it seemed to have more detail back then before all the colors meshed together to screw it up. Maybe this only makes sense to me. I have a great idea or dream in my head and I don't know how exactly to get it out so that the world can enjoy it.

Does this mean I am not an artist when my picture turns out looking like a horror film zombie instead of the beautiful fly fishing scene I thought would come to birth? Does it mean my songs don't mean anything or are worthless, just because I can't seem to play the tune that is truly running around my head?

At the moment I don't know.

To be continued...

Andy Osenga-Letters to the editor Vol. 2

Andy Osenga has a new album out, actually it's a six song EP. I have been waiting for something new from Andy for a while. His first Letters to the editor was good, real good. The best thing about these two EP's is that they are FREE on his website or you can donate to the cause if you are a little richer than the normal dude.

I recommend this album to you all. Be prepared though, Andy is not your shiny plastic bar code Christian singer, he covers the tough stuff and has you aching for more. I found myself crying when I heard the song "Four Horses". When you download it there is an extra file that has pictures and reasons and explanations for all the songs.

You may remember Andy from when he came and sang with Caedmon's Call at Sunset Pres a few Octobers ago.

Another cool note is that my friend Crystal Davy from India sings and plays the penny whistle on the album.

The River Why-A movie?

This evening I called my father to talk about a few things. One of them was about possibly fly fishing with him soon. I love fly fishing and yet get to do it on very rare occasions. In the midst of talking about fishing he was reminded of something he heard about one of my favorite books The River Why by David James Duncan my all time favorite writer.

It was this book that really got me into the idea of fly fishing. I have fished for years, but not real man fishing, little boy fishing. Fly fishing is real man stuff. The River Why was my introduction to the world of fly fishing. Well before I ever set foot in an Oregon river with fly-rod in hand I stepped foot into the world of Gus Orviston and his crazy fly fishing antics. I fell in love with this book, laughing, crying, and soon believing that this pastime was for me.

Oh, so the good news? Well my beloved book is coming to a theater near you in the year 2009! I am so excited, I have been waiting for this ever since I finished the book the second time. Here's to the hope that they make The Brothers K into a mini-series!
